Suez Canal Blockage & Its Effects To Global Shipping

Although the Suez Canal blockage incident in late of March and early of April has been resolved and the global arterial traffic has been through, however, the chain reaction to the global shipping has just begun to appear. Some of the obvious affects are listed below: 1. To sea shipping: Port congestion Now that the canal has reopened, cargo vessels passing through the waterway will likely arrive at their destinations too close together due to being off schedule. This can cause vessel bunching and congestion at major ports such as Rotterdam and Antwerp. Although most of the cargo flowing through the Suez Canal moves from Asia to Europe, a remarkable volume of Southeast Asian (Vietnam included) and Indian goods come to the U.S. East Coast via this route as well. Major U.S. ports such as New York will therefore also be hit with congestion as imports begin to arrive. Container imbalances: Due to the affect from Suez Canal blockage, the shortage of empty container availability has been an ongoing issue in Asia as demand from both the U.S. and Europe remains high. Cargo ships blocked at Suez are unable to return empties to Asia on schedule and filled containers will be further delayed as ports in Europe and the U.S. work through bottlenecks are some of main reasons causing the imbalance between container supply and demand in the market this period. In the end of March, Maersk shipping company announced the suspension of booking on the online platform, as well as suspending for short-term contract bookings in the first week of April, and for some other regions in the near future due to the impact of container shortage. Impact on vessel schedule: Delayed cargo ships are expected to omit or cancel sailings in the coming days and weeks to bring their schedules back in order, as well as need to re-structure their vessel for new US season from 1st May. These structural blank sailings will negatively impact capacity, in this case, possibly as much as 20%-30% over the next several weeks, leading to the result of shortage space on ship. Impact on oil prices and shipping rates: Around 10% of total seaborne oil trade is estimated to pass through the Suez waterway. On a daily basis, it’s close to 3 million barrels per day. Suez’s also a key route for oil tankers going to and from the Middle East (connecting Europe, the Middle East and Asia.) This blockage incident has a significant impact on oil prices, and at the same time makes the freight rate increase significantly. 2. To air shipping: The decrease in transport capacity: The Suez blockage incident is not only impact on sea shipping, but also has many negative consequences for other transportation methods. Freight forwarders and shippers begun to consider other transportation modes, and airfreight in particular; making the already shortage capacity due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic more and more stress and difficulty. High airfreight rates: Increasing demand for air cargo services along with shortage capacity lead to the high cost from airline. From beginning of April, there appears to be no end in sight for soaring air freight prices. Conclusion Most of the transport routes from sea to air are facing a shortage of available empty container, spaces, skyrocketing freight rates… and this situation is definitely impossible to end in the short term. During this difficult period, Vantage still has available containers, spaces and means of transport for customers when needed, this is the effort and consensus of the whole Vantage staff. However, it would be a deficiency not to mention that in order to obtain bookings at competitive and reasonable prices for customers, Trade Managers and members of each trade of the OPS department have tried their best and relentless efforts, especially during this difficult time. Each booking – that helps customers to import/export their goods in-line with their schedule – is the silent contributions of the OPS staffs to the success of customers, also a contribution to the Mission of Vantage Logistics is to provide our partners/customers highest possible service level, with continuous improvement on quality and cost....

Vantage Chartered Flights to Carry Face Masks To USA

Covid-19 epidemic keeps spreading fast on the world, especially in the Americas and Europe, the demand for personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, gowns… increasingly high. This period is considered both a business opportunity and a challenge for Vietnamese businesses. This opportunity and challenge are not only in manufacturing but also in logistics and transportation, especially in air freight since airlines are cutting down capacity or even halting international flights. Facing the rushing need of transporting a shipment of 16 million masks which were packed in 6400 cartons to the US, Vantage’s team had come up with several options in-line with customers’ expectations: fast, safe, convenient, reasonable cost and effective; and charter flight solution was selected. A plan to charter the whole flight has been specifically evaluated and implemented urgently. Within 5 days, Vantage had successfully arranged to have 2 chartered flights (B777F and B777-300 Pax) departing from Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) on Sunday, June 28 evening, transiting via Taipei (to change flight crew and add fuel), and arriving at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) early Monday morning, June 29 so customers can take cargo out the same day. With the working motto of serving – supporting – solving problems for customers, Vantage team was like being reinvigorated when contributing to the success of customers. This can be considered the achievement of our team’s outstanding effort to support and deliver the best service to our customers during this difficult time. Launching A Direct Container Shipping Route From Qui Nhon To China And Northeast Asia, Vantage Contributes To Solutions Of Developing Import-Export Economy For Northern Cambodia, Southern Laos And The Central and Highland of Viet Nam

China, a country of more than 1.4 billion people, has a huge demand for fruits, of which tropical fruits are accounting for 30 million tons/year while Bananas take 50% of these, about 15 million tons/year. Previously, China’s main tropical fruit growing areas were Yunnan, Hainan, Western Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces. Recently, due to climate change, culturing areas in China have been shrinking and could only be harvested in the summer. In order to meet consumer demand, China had to switch to growing crops or buying tropical fruits from Southeast Asian countries, of which Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia are the major suppliers because of good soil and planting. These fruits suit Chinese consumers’ tastes, and are geographically advantageous, so the transportation costs are quite suitable. Dragon fruit, jackfruit, etc… are also the main export fruits to China Regardless of this, the export of fruits to China by Vietnam – Laos, and Cambodia is challenging though, especially during the 19 COVID season. The first difficulty is the transport route. Since Cat Lai port, Ho Chi Minh City holds major container cargo volume, especially reefer containers, all of the goods go through Cat Lai port causes continuous congestion and only a small incident like a ship missing her berth schedule 1-2 days, a collision in the channel immediately create big congestion which makes the entire operations delay, trucks, barges, vessels cannot load/discharge being under detention and cannot perform the next trip, causing the sequential effect to harvest, shipping, export plan… while fruits are perishable commodities that need fast delivery. The second difficulty is the transportation distance. For planting areas nearby Ho Chi Minh City such as Mekong Delta or central – southern Cambodia, transporting to the port of HCMC is relatively close, but for the Highlands and Central areas of Vietnam, northern Cambodia or Southern Laos, transport to Cat Lai port will be several hundred km further than to other port in the Central, and this distance must be doubled due to two-way transportation: take empty containers to planting areas to load, and return laden containers back to the port for export. The third difficulty is the cost. Of course, a longer distance will definitely take a longer travel time with a higher cost, adding to that, congestion in port insert a lot of idling time in a round trip. When vehicles cannot optimize the operation, obviously transportation costs will be high. During the epidemic season, governments impose a lot of methods to control and prevent the virus spreading, including the limit of time to cross the border every day, health control stops to check driver’s temperature and document, regulations on personal protection equipment, banning drivers and customs agents to cross the border,  helping to protect health for personnel but on the other hand, there are many difficulties in trading activities. After several months providing logistics solutions for the fruit market, Vantage immediately made many adjustments and reorganized the supply chain to help fruit producers and exporters reduced logistics costs from 8 to 15%, increased the competitiveness of Southeast Asian fruits in the China market. Specifically, Vantage has boldly signed a guarantee to ensure the minimum volume for shipping lines to bring ships and provide direct service from Quy Nhon port to China with the transit time of only 6-11 days (compared to the current transshipment service which takes from 13 to 23 days). Besides, Vantage had actively proposed to customers to re-allocate the agricultural materials supply area to optimize the transport of agricultural materials and fruits. Vantage has invested in refrigerated container yards and lifting equipment at the main border gates of Hoa Lu, Le Thanh, Bo Y to shift containers between vehicles quickly and safely. Moreover, Vantage has also invested and managed a multi-owner truck-fleet to serve across Vietnam – Laos – Cambodia route starting from 200 units and will increase to over 1,000 units in the future, meanwhile, we mobilized skilled drivers to neighbor countries, accepted their national requirements of quarantine regulations to ensure that goods flow smoothly during the Covid-19 period. Thanks to the enthusiasm, extensive knowledge, good practical knowledge, high determination and active cooperation of customers, especially Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group, port partners, especially Quy Nhon port, truck owners, shipping lines… the first voyages always exceeded the committed volume by nearly 100%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the solution, all participating partners were satisfied. The direct service from Qui Nhon Port to China opening up prospects for even more success for the business as well as increase the competitiveness of Vietnamese fruits exporting to China market From this success, this new and efficient transport route has attracted many other import and export customers in the Central and Highlands, Northern Cambodia and Southern Laos, not only between Vietnam – Laos – Cambodia, and China but also other Northeast Asian countries. Manufacturers and traders of fertilizers, agricultural materials, wood chips, wood pellets, tapioca starch … are very excited because the transport time is significantly reduced compared to the previous period, and the cost also significantly reduced, opening up prospects for even more success for the business. As for Vantage, we are still working day and night finding better, more advanced, and more beneficial solutions for our customers, because our customers’ success is our success. Exporting Mask and Medical Protective Equipment: Tight Space for Air Cargo and The Solutions

In the situation of COVID-19 pandemic complicated outbreaks in Europe and the Americas, many countries are forced to increase the import of masks and medical protective equipment such as gloves, gowns, etc… Vietnamese enterprises have quickly taken advantages of this opportunity to make up for some difficulties that the pandemic had caused. Business opportunity due to huge market demand According to the information from the European-American Market Department, The Ministry of Industry and Trade, many countries in Europe and the Americas are in need of importing masks, PPE for control and prevention of the COVID-19 pandemic which is more and more complicated in these areas. In particular, the US market now needs to import about 500 million N95 masks, 200 million masks of all kinds, 1 billion gloves, 100 million sets of medical gowns, 50 million sets of PPE, etc… Other markets such as Spain, Kazakhstan, Canada, Russia… are also in urgent need of importing masks and medical protective equipment. Current difficulties that Vietnam exporters are facing Along with business opportunities, Vietnam exporters in general and exporters of masks and PPE in particular, are facing many difficulties caused by COVID-19 pandemic, especially the difficulty of freight transport when the international cargo capacity of both sea freight and air freight is decreasing. For masks and medical protective equipment that are in great demand and urgent need, delivery by air freight is a priority option. However, the global air cargo capacity has decreased since the airlines had cut the number of flights due to the effect of COVID-19. Accordingly, the total global air cargo capacity decreased by 26% compared to the same period last year, while in Vietnam, airlines have cut 15-20% of the number of flights, some airlines flying to the US had completely stopped. Export delivery demand is rapidly increasing while air freight space dramatically decreased is really a big challenge. Solutions for air freight from Vantage Logistics Keeping up with the movement of the market as well as the needs of customers in the current period, with experience and professional skills, Vantage Logistics has come up with effective solutions to help customers to smoothly transport their goods at reasonable costs. An example is our safe and successful delivery of 5×40’HC containers of medical gowns exported to Los Angeles, US on May 29. The shipment of 298.4 thousand gowns was packed in 2,615 cartons, the total weight of 27 tons, equivalent to 250CBMs, needs only 3 days from ex-work till arrival at Los Angeles airport during the period that it takes at least 8-10 days for similar shipments. This can be considered the achievement of our team’s outstanding effort to support and deliver the best service to our customers during this difficult time. Solution for Exporting Vietnamese Agricultural Products to China During the Border Congestion?

The complicated evolution of acute pneumonia caused by the new strain of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (referred to as COVID-19 pandemic) is not only has a huge impact on people’s health and daily-life but also seriously affects economic trade between countries on over the world. In particular, Vietnam’s agricultural export industry is one of the sectors greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Agricultural products are considered as one of the main export items of Vietnam, and China is one of the main buyers of Vietnam agricultural products, accounting for 22-24% of the import proportion. Thanks to the geography position, the export of Vietnamese agricultural products to the world’s most populous market is pretty convenient through the border gates between the two countries. A lot of vehicles of agricultural products exporting to China were congested in border gates. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the trade circuit between the two countries was limited, China announced to shorten open time at Tan Thanh and Coc Nam border from 8 down to 5 hours per day and close on weekends. China only accepts import-export of cargo through 5 border gates in Lang Son province, in particular, as per notice from Pingxiang authority, from 7 Apr 2020, secondary gates Tan Thanh and Coc Nam only work 5 hours/day (8 to 11:00, 12 to 14:00) and close on Saturday Sunday and holidays. China only maintains import via 5 borders: Friendship, Dong Dang International Railway Station, Chi Ma, Tan Thanh, Coc Nam. Other small border gates are close and impose strict pandemic control on border trades. Specifically, as of the beginning of April 2020, there are about 700 vehicles of agricultural products congesting at Tan Thanh border gate, 600 vehicles at Huu Nghi border gate; this congestion has a huge impact on Vietnamese agricultural exporters, causing decrease of cargo quality and increase a lot of cost. Vantage Logistics has developed an alternative logistics solution for transporting agricultural products to China, minimize the congestion at borders. This is a 1-stop-shop logistics solution by incorporating with shipping lines and trucking partners, building a warehouse to meet the conditions for storing agricultural products at border gates, working with authorities to constantly update the situation of customs clearance, in order to optimize transport time and cost. *** For more detailed advice on logistics solution for agricultural exports to China, please contact our experts: – Vietnamese/English speaking: + Mrs. Queenie Lâm (Operations Manager) – Email: queenie-vn@vantage-logistics.com.vn / +84 908 798 685 + Mr. Joe Nguyễn (Business Development Executive) – Email: joe.sgn@vantage-logistics.com.vn / +84 383 037 493 + Ms. Aster Huỳnh (BOM’s Assistant) –Email:  aster.sgn@vantage-logistics.com.vn – Chinese speaking: + Mr. Billy Lưu (Sales Manager) – Email: billy-vn@vantage-logistics.com.vn / +84 938 189 278 + Mrs. Audrey Lương (Trucking Coordinator) – Email: trucking1.sgn@vantage-logistics.com.vn...
